While the talk calls atten tion to the indenture and absence of labor protection for domestic workers \, it establishes and describes their labor conditions as falling under th ree prevailing cultural patterns: a) dehumanization\; b) infantilization\; c) recognition. This diversity questions the common view of domestic work ers in Dubai as nothing-but abuse victims\, an argument made by scholars w ho reduce our reading of the kafala (sponsorship) system to 'structural vi olence.' Countering the reduction of our understanding of domestic work to the structures that shape them\, the talk argues that morals mediate mark et activities and result in a diversity of labor standards across househol ds. The talk describes the process by which morals shape the labor conditi ons of domestic work.\n DTSTART:20170215T160000Z DTEND:20170215T173000Z LOCATION:855 Sherbrooke Street West | Montréal\, QC\, H3A 2T7 \, CA\, Leaco ck 738 SUMMARY:Rhacel Parrenas\, Mobilizing Morality: Migrant Domestic Workers in Dubai URL:/sociology/channels/event/rhacel-parrenas-mobilizi ng-morality-migrant-domestic-workers-dubai-265403 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
