The evolutionary genetic dissection of the immune system has greatly helped t o distinguish genes and functions that are essential\, redundant or advant ageous for human survival. It is also becoming increasingly clear that anc ient admixture between early Eurasians with now-extinct hominins such as N eanderthals or Denisovans\, or modern admixture between human populations\ , can be beneficial for human adaptation to environmental cues\, including pathogen pressures. I will focus on how integrating population genetics a nd functional genomics of contemporary humans with ancient DNA from both a ncient humans and extinct hominins — including ancient DNA data from diffe rent epochs — can inform about key immunological mechanisms of host defens e and the detection of natural selection in real time. Furthermore\, I wil l present our most recent data on the dissection of the genetic and evolut ionary factors driving variation in human immune responses to respiratory RNA viruses\, including SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus. Collectively\, o ur results suggest that\, while environmentally-driven differences in cell ular composition are a major contributor to population variation in immuni ty to infection\, genetic ancestry and adaptive evolution have also played a critical role in the differentiation of immune responses to viruses pre sently observed across major continental groups.\n DTSTART:20220317T160000Z DTEND:20220317T170000Z LOCATION:CA\, QC SUMMARY:QLS Seminar - Lluis Quintana-Murci URL:/qls/channels/event/qls-seminar-lluis-quintana-mur ci-339135 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
