Academic standing

91Ƶ

Your academic standing is a general indication of how well you are doing in your program. It is also used to determine whether you are permitted to enrol for the next academic cycle, and if there are any conditions attached to your registration (e.g. limits to the number of credits in which you can register in a given term).

It is your responsibility to review your academic standing on your unofficial Minerva transcript each term and to report any issues toArts OASIS.

When you start your undergraduate Arts degree (BA, BTh or BSW), you are in Satisfactory Standing. After the end of each of the Fall and Winter terms, your academic standing is calculated based on the final grades that are available on your Minerva record, your (see below) and your faculty regulations.

Standings for the Fall term are Interim if you are registered for courses in the following Winter term. If you are not registered for courses in the Winter term, the Fall standing decision will be the final standing decision for the Fall and Winter academic year. When your academic standing has been generated, you can view it on your unofficial/advising or official 91Ƶ transcript.

Term When academic standings are generated
Fall January
Winter May

A Term Grade Point Average (TGPA)is calculated for each term of your current degree, based on the that are available in that term. If you are registered in a full year course taught in two consecutive terms (most commonly Fall D1 and Winter D2), no credit or final grade will be given for the course until it is completed at the end of the Winter term.

A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated using the  of any and all applicable undergraduate courses completed in your current degree.

Here are the different academic standing decisions:

Academic Standing GPA Required Conditions
CGPA of 2.00 or higher No conditions. You can continue in your program.
CGPA between 1.5 and 1.99; TGPA of 2.50 or higher Course load conditions apply.
CGPA of 1.49 or lower Significant conditions apply. You cannot continue without approval.

Interim Probationary (at the end of the Fall term) or Probationary standing (at the end of the Winter or Summer term)

This academic standing permits you to continue your studies under the following conditions:

  • You must reduce your credit load to a maximum of 14 credits per term. If you registered for 15 credits or more, you will be required to reduce your course load.
  • You must achieve a CGPA of 2.00 or higher for your standing to become “Satisfactory”.

OR

  • You must achieve a TGPA of 2.50 or higher and a CGPA between 1.50 and 1.99 at the end of the current term to be permitted to continue your studies.
  • You will be assigned to a Arts OASIS Faculty Adviser. You are required to schedule regular check-ins with the adviser throughout the semester to discuss strategies to improve your academic achievement and to discuss your degree plan.
  • You are strongly advised to consult with a about your course selection in each of your programs of study before course withdrawal deadlines.

Students whose TGPA continues to be 2.50 or higher in each subsequent term and whose CGPA continues to be between 1.50 and 1.99 may continue their studies in Probationary Standing.

NOTE: In order to graduate, you must achieve a CGPA of 2.0 or higher.

Interim Unsatisfactory or Unsatisfactory

This academic standing prevents you from continuing your studies without Faculty approval.

Each term, Arts OASIS will review the records of undergraduate Arts students to render a decision on their continuation of studies. This is done:

  1. At the end of the Fall term, for those who fall into Interim UԲپڲٴǰ Standing; and
  2. At the end of the Winter, for those who fall into Unsatisfactory Standing.

Interim Unsatisfactory

If your standing is Interim Unsatisfactory at the end of the Fall term, you are permitted to continue your studies in the Winter term but must immediately reduce your current courseload to less than 15cr.

Note: If you manage to register for 15 or more credits and choose not to voluntarily drop a course, be aware that OASIS reserves the right to remove a course from your academic record at its discretion.

Unsatisfactory

If your standing is Unsatisfactory at the end of the Winter term, you are not permitted to register (or to remain registered) for the upcoming academic year and will need to request readmission.

Note: If you nonetheless remain registered for the upcoming year, be advised that your courses will shortly be dropped from your academic record.

  • Using the guide for self-assessment, you will be asked to describe the extenuating circumstances that affected your academic performance and submit any supporting documentation. Your request for readmission must include an academic plan detailing what steps you need to take to improve your performance.
  • If readmitted, you will be required to schedule regular check-ins with your assigned Arts OASIS Faculty Advisor throughout the semester to discuss strategies to improve your academic achievement and discuss your degree plan.
  • You are strongly advised to consult with a departmental advisor about your course selection in each of your programs of study.

Arts OASIS will review your request for readmission and will render a decision via the Minerva Readmission module.

Summer Courses and Academic Standing

If you registered for Summer courses, you may remain enrolled. However, please note that your academic standing from the Winter term carries forward to the Summer term.

Incomplete Standings

An Incomplete Standing is generated in instances when a TGPA cannot be calculated because of missing grades, or grades such as L, K, NA or NR.

  • If this is your situation, please check your email regularly as you may need to apply for readmission.
  • You must meet with an Arts OASIS Faculty Advisor to discuss your academic situation and apply for readmission by the deadline as a pre-emptive measure if your CGPA falls below a 2.0
