Scott en droit constitutionnel.\n\nWatch\n\n\n About the speaker\n\nThe Honourable Michelle O’Bonsawin was appointed to t he Supreme Court of Canada on September 1\, 2022. She served as a justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa from 2017 to 2022.\n\nP rior to her appointment\, Justice O’Bonsawin was General Counsel for the R oyal Ottawa Health Care Group for eight years. In this role\, she develope d a thorough understanding of legal issues related to mental health and pe rformed significant research regarding the use of Gladue principles in the forensic mental health system\, appearing before various administrative t ribunals and levels of courts\, including the Human Rights Tribunal of Ont ario\, the Consent and Capacity Board\, the Ontario Review Board\, the Ont ario Superior Court of Justice\, the Ontario Court of Justice\, and the On tario Court of Appeal. She began her legal career with the legal services at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and was then Counsel with Canada Post \, specializing in labour and employment law\, human rights\, and privacy law.\n\nJustice O’Bonsawin has taught Indigenous law at the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Program and was previously responsible for the Indigen ous Relations Program at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. She is a freq uent guest speaker on Gladue principles\, Indigenous issues\, as well as m ental health\, labour\, and privacy law. Justice O’Bonsawin is also the au thor of various publications such as: A difficult Road to Justice: The Rel ationship Between Mental Health and Access to Justice in the 91µĽş˝ĘÓƵ Law Jo urnal (2024)\; Access to Justice and Gladue Reports: We All Have a Role to Play in Lawyer’s Daily (2020)\; A Principled Approach: Applying Gladue Pr inciples at the Ontario Review Board in the National Judicial Institute In digenous Law Subject Collection (2018)\; Canada’s Bill C-14 [NCR] A Knee J erk Reaction to Sensationalized Not Criminally Responsible Cases in the Ca nadian Criminal Law Review (2016)\; Mental Health Checklist: A Guide for M embers of the Judiciary (2016).\n\nJustice O’Bonsawin holds a Bachelor of Arts from Laurentian University\, a Bachelor of Law from the University of Ottawa\, a Master of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School\, and a Doctorate i n Law from the University of Ottawa. She is also the recipient of honorary doctorates from Bishop’s University and Laurentian University.\n\nJustice O’Bonsawin grew up in Hanmer\, Ontario\, a small Francophone town near Su dbury. Dans ce rĂ´le\, elle a acquis une comprĂ©hension approfondie des questions j uridiques liĂ©es Ă  la santĂ© mentale et a effectuĂ© d’importantes recherches sur l’application des principes Ă©noncĂ©s dans l’arrĂŞt Gladue dans le systèm e de santĂ© mentale en contexte judiciaire\, comparaissant devant divers tr ibunaux administratifs et judiciaires\, notamment le Tribunal des droits d e la personne de l’Ontario\, la Commission du consentement et de la capaci tĂ©\, la Commission ontarienne d’examen\, la Cour supĂ©rieure de justice de l’Ontario\, la Cour de justice de l’Ontario et la Cour d’appel de l’Ontari o. Elle a commencĂ© sa carrière juridique au sein des services juridiques d e la Gendarmerie royale du Canada et a par la suite agi Ă  titre d’avocate Ă  Postes Canada\, oĂą elle s’est spĂ©cialisĂ©e dans les domaines du droit du travail et de l’emploi\, des droits de la personne et du droit relatif Ă  l a protection de la vie privĂ©e.\n\nLa juge O’Bonsawin a enseignĂ© le droit d es Autochtones dans le cadre du Programme de common law de l’UniversitĂ© d’ Ottawa et a Ă©tĂ© responsable du Programme des relations autochtones du Grou pe des services de santĂ© Royal Ottawa. Elle prononce rĂ©gulièrement des con fĂ©rences sur des questions touchant les principes de l’arrĂŞt Gladue\, les enjeux autochtones ainsi que le droit relatif Ă  la santĂ© mentale\, au trav ail et Ă  la protection Ă  la vie privĂ©e.
