East Asian Studies (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in听East Asian Studies(Ad Hoc) offered by the Faculty of Arts ffers interdisciplinary training and specialization in the cultural, social, and historical research on Asia from literature to migration, from visual art to popular religion, and from film and media to gender politics. Historical periods of specialization covered range from the medieval to the contemporary. Particular emphasis is placed on intercultural, transnational, and feminist approaches to the study of East Asia.

Unique Program Features

  • Exceptional students with appropriate background at the undergraduate level may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program.
  • The听Centre for East Asian Research听(CEAR), affiliated with the Department of East Asian Studies, actively supports and encourages community outreach. It offers a wide range of activities throughout the year such as lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops, speech contests, and cultural activities, and welcomes new associate members.
  • East Asian Studies graduates have successfully pursued careers in business, academia, law, the arts, and the sciences.听

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
