The interface where rapid AI development meets soc ietal structures\, mechanisms and norms is both filled with potential and fraught with concerns. Successfully navigating this interface arguably is one of the greatest challenges we face today. 91Ƶ has tremen dous strengths in many aspects of AI and already is contributing – and oft en leading – in this space in many ways. The McCAIS mission is to facilita te strategic integration of these various distributed strengths around the AI/Society interface at 91Ƶ\, in both research and education. And\, in doing so\, serve as a vehicle for increasing both impact and visibility o f those strengths.\n\n\n \n\n\n What is McCAIS? The “Collaborative” model i s an opt-in model aimed at helping the 91Ƶ whole be even greater than t he sum of the parts at the AI /Society interface – while at the same time allowing those various parts (whether at individual\, departmental/center\ , or Faculty levels) the necessary flexibility to continue to lead\, innov ate\, and inspire in their respective areas. This model is also intended t o help 91Ƶ better partner collectively with major local\, national\, an d global groups and organizations of similar interests. McCAIS will be hos ted for the university community by the 91Ƶ Computational and Data Syst ems Initiative (CDSI) and\, as such\, supported by CDSI staff.\n\n\n \n\n \n Where are we at with McCAIS planning and where are we heading? The McCAI S concept grew out of a six month long\, deliberate scoping exercise\, coo rdinated by the CDSI\, that involved voices from domain area experts\, lea dership\, and advancement\, among others. Four pillars were identified for initial McCAIS focus: Thought Leadership\, Research to Action\, Experient ial Learning\, and Lifelong Learning. The next step in our planning is to hold the above-mentioned launch event for the 91Ƶ community\, with the goals of eliciting a sense of common strengths and interests around these pillars and beginning to discuss structures and mechanisms for bringing en ergy and resources to bear on them.\n\n\n\n  \n DTSTART:20231204T190000Z DTEND:20231204T230000Z LOCATION:Faculty Club\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E5\, 3450 rue McTavish SUMMARY:Launch Event: 91Ƶ Collaborative for AI & Society (McCAIS) URL:/cdsi/channels/event/launch-event-mcgill-collabora tive-ai-society-mccais-352167 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
